Six months pregnant with her first child, Caroline Freedman was on a fact finding mission. Remember those nights? Staring at the computer screen for hours, soaking up every bit of information you could find on parenting? Freaking out about the ‘best’ baby wipes? She started googling ‘infant feeding,’ eager to see what was available.
Her discovery? Not much had changed since she was a baby! Food was still being pureed and sold in thick glass jars. And it was still — well, not entirely tasty.
After sharing this revelation with longtime friend Lauren McCullough over a plate of Polvo’s nachos, the two decided to change the marketplace and create a good-for-the-earth baby food product that was convenient without sacrificing nutrition. {{Insert thunderous applause}}.
Introducing NurturMe, naturally grown and quick dried fruits and veggies that come in light weight, palm-sized pouches. Just add water, formula or breast milk and — viola!
An organic baby food that’s nutritious, can be thrown in my purse and doesn’t require an hour of steaming and pureeing plus a cooler to keep cold on the go? Kinda brilliant in this not-so-crunchy-mom’s opinion.
Why quick drying rather than the traditional pureeing? Quick drying is a food preparation method that allows the fruit or veggie to retain the most nutrients, as well as original color and taste. So the apples, peas and sweet potatoes go from organic soil to spoon with very little interference or processing. No salt, sugar or preservatives.
Two years later, NurturMe is available to parents-on-the-go everywhere through stores and their website. How successful is the product? Well, Caroline and Lauren have just recently left their ‘real jobs’ to take on managing the company product full-time.
Although Caroline had a business background and Lauren had a culinary arts background, neither of these entrepreneurs had any experience bringing a product to market. But what they lacked in experience, they made up in gumption. What does Caroline attribute their success to? Late nights, a supportive spouse who’s a hands on dad, playing just as hard as they work, kitchen food experiments gone a muck, and the budding entrepreneurial community in their hometown of Austin, Texas.
As her daughter Audrey has grown into a bouncing pre-schooler, Caroline and Lauren have started experimenting with how NurturMe packets can give an added nutritional boost to kid-friendly foods such as pasta, mac ‘n cheese or even oatmeal! Check out their blog for other ideas.
